Yoga Is Surrender

The founders of our school, Matt and Holly Krepps, have built this community on a deep understanding of Yoga as the practice of Surrender.

And this concept isn’t just a metaphor; it’s a cornerstone of classical yoga philosophy as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and it resonates deeply with contemplative traditions worldwide.

Now, let’s take a moment to clarify what surrender really means.

Surrender isn’t about giving up or admitting defeat. It’s about letting go of resistance and the need to control everything in life. It’s an invitation to trust the flow of existence—whether you call it nature, the cosmos, or a higher power. This trust enables us to align with life’s greater rhythm, leading to a state of inner peace.

Yoga invites us to see surrender not as weakness, but as a strength that opens the doorway to freedom—freedom from attachment, fear, and the illusion of separateness.

Still, it is difficult to do this work alone.

This is why our method for training Yoga teachers is infused with repeated invitations to soften, to open, to sense deeply, so that we can begin to actively participate with Reality.

Here are some examples that are at the core of our Yoga Teacher Training:

  1. We train our students to let go of unnecessary tension in asana, whether it’s in movement or stillness.

  2. We direct attention toward the natural rhythm of the breath (called the “breath body”) so that we can discover how the breath and the nervous system may be tuned.

  3. We care for the physical body, especially when we’re in pain as well as when we’re hungry, tired, lonely or angry.

  4. We sensitize ourselves to our unconscious preferences, which can easily highjack our mood (especially when those preferences are not met!)

This process takes times, but it’s one of the most important practices you can dedicate yourself to. When we release the grip of control, we find the courage to truly live, moment by moment.
