Why We Teach ‘Touchless’ Adjustments

Here at Circle Yoga Shala, we believe the role of a yoga teacher goes beyond teaching postures; it’s about empowering students to connect with their own bodies, cultivate independence, and create a space where everyone feels safe. This is why we include touchless adjustments in our yoga teacher training programs. Here’s how this approach is foundational to our teaching philosophy.

Empower the Student

One of the most important reasons we avoid hands-on adjustments is to give students the opportunity to take action themselves. When a teacher physically moves a student into alignment, the student doesn’t learn how to find that position on their own. They rely on the teacher’s touch rather than developing their own body awareness.

Instead, we teach our yoga teachers to use precise verbal cues and visual demonstrations to guide students. This allows students to build independence and confidence in their practice. Empowering someone to listen to their own body and make adjustments themselves is a gift that extends beyond the yoga mat.

Stay Within Scope

Another reason we practice touchless adjustments is because manual adjustments are often outside the scope of practice for yoga teachers. Unless a teacher is also a licensed massage therapist, physical therapist, or has additional specialized training, manual adjustments can quickly venture into areas that yoga teachers are not qualified to address.

As yoga teachers, our role is to educate and guide students—not to diagnose or treat. By staying within our scope, we ensure that we’re offering safe and ethical instruction that respects the boundaries of our profession.

Honor Individual Stories

Every student who steps onto the mat brings their own life experiences, which may include trauma. Touch can sometimes be triggering, evoking discomfort or even a sense of unsafety.

By using touchless adjustments, we create a space where every student feels respected and secure. Instead of relying on touch, we focus on fostering trust through clear communication, compassion, and presence.

Virtual Versatility

Touchless adjustments are especially valuable in virtual settings where physical contact is impossible. Teachers can still effectively guide students, ensuring their practice is just as enriching and safe as in-person sessions. With the growing popularity of virtual yoga classes, this skill is an amazing perk!

If you share our passion for creating safe and empowering yoga spaces, we’d love to have you join us for our next 200-hour or 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training. Let’s explore how to guide others in their practice while staying grounded in respect, safety, and compassion.
